The Southwest Hosts Enhancing Lifelong Learning (SHELL) is a project that
was funded by the JISC from April 2002 to February 2005 under its MLEs for
Lifelong Learning programme http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=mle_lifelonglearning_info
with a focus on building MLEs across HE and FE. The project aimed to integrate
technologies between the University of Plymouth and its FE partner colleges,
in particular, the development of single student registration and transfer
of information for students moving from FE to HE. The Learning Matrix will
build on the ioNode middleware server solution developed by Phosphorix to
support the integration and interoperability of the various SHELL partners'
student information systems.

The Northern Ireland Integrated Managed Learning Environment (NIIMLE) project
represents a further JISC-funded project (from June 2002 to May 2005) under
the MLEs for Lifelong Learning: Building MLEs across HE and FE programme.
The project aimed to facilitate the movement of students from FE to HE on
a Northern Ireland regional basis with the development of technologies that
enabled the sharing of information about students' individual academic and
pastoral needs.
